News and Updates
31 July 2008 Summer specialty of the Lapphund Club of Finland in Rokua 19 July: Yet another class win for Edi, who, in fact, was the only junior dog graded Excellent at the show. Nuuk did very well, too, and despite his lack of coat went second in the intermediate class with a Very Good grading. Lempi got EXC/3 in the veteran class. Adult Lappies were judged by Raimo Viljanmaa, whereas puppies were put through their paces by Marjatta Pylvänäinen-Suorsa. Mette made her debut and, much to my delight, showed very nicely and went second in the baby puppy class with a honorary prize. To top off the nice day, yours truly had the pleasure of judging the Junior Handling and Children's Handling competitions.
Ylivieska International 20 July: This was the second show for Nuuk and Edi over the weekend and I was delighted to get a text message saying that Edi had been awarded his second CC by Matti Tuominen! He was placed third in the dog challenge. Nuuk repeated his result from the day before: VG/2 in the intermediate class. Well done! Edi photographed below by Hanna Keskitalo - thank you again!
13 July 2008 Oulu International 12 July: Edi added one more junior class win to his credit, this time graded Very Good by Paula Heikkinen-Lehkonen. However, the star of the day was Nuuk, who not only won his class with an Excellent grading but also went fourth in the very competitive dog challenge and took his second CC despite the fact that he was sporting a very summery look with hardly any undercoat left. Way to go Nuuk & owner Pirjo! This beautiful headshot of the always smiling CC winner is by Hanna Keskitalo - thanks!
Some new health results for Kukka: she had clear eyes and her hips and elbows looked good in the x-rays (the final scores will arrive from the Finnish Kennel Club in a few weeks' time). The best news, however, was that Kukka's left patella had improved with age and it was diagnosed with only mild patella luxation (grade 1). The right patella is free from PL (grade 0). Thank you Johanna for having Kukka examined!
8 July 2008 New photos added to Aarni's gallery.
2 July 2008 Show ring news from May and June:
Himanka group show 17 May: Jeppe VG/2 in the open class and Hertta, who was out and about for the first time in almost five years, EXC/2 in the champion class & fourth in the bitch challenge under Arvi Ellmén.
Sotkamo group show 24 May: Graded Excellent, Edi won the junior class, went third in the dog challenge and was awarded a reserve CC, whereas Nuuk won his class as well with a Very Good grading. The judge was Esko Salkonen.
Kestilä group show 25 May: Edi VG/1, Nuuk G, and Jeppe EXC/2 under Jukka Kuusisto.
Piteå International, Sweden 31 May: Peppi went second in the open class and Lempi won the veteran class, both with an Excellent grading. They ended up being placed fourth and fifth in the bitch challenge by Tina Permo. Lempi also went BOS veteran. Tina Permo was also judging Pharaoh Hounds and gave Kiara CACIB & BOS!
Raahe group show 7 June: Edi EXC/1 & fourth place in the dog challenge under Sakari Poti. What is more, he went on to take the CC - congratulations are in order for this handsome youngster! Thank you Hanna Keskitalo for the lovely photos below.
Suomussalmi group show 14 June: Nuuk went VG/1 under Arvi Ellmén. Gällivare International, Sweden 21 June: We almost gave this show a miss as Kiara had got her Swedish CACIB at Piteå a few weeks earlier so there was nothing left for her to achieve. Lempi the golden oldie was only entered for fun as she likes going to dog shows. The evening before the show we decided to go anyway and it turned out to be the right decision since Lempi won the veteran class, went second in the bitch challenge and got the CC, which makes her a Swedish champion at the age of 11.5 years! Furthermore, she was BOS veteran again. The judge on the day was Ing-Marie Hagelin.
New photos on the following pages: gallery (Basenji photos under Posing & various photos under Pairs and groups), Hertta, Peppi, Quinto, Toppe, Remu, and Vekku - thank you everyone who sent pictures!
14 May 2008

Kiara took part in a lure coursing competition at Kajaani 3 May and made her way into the finals. Her final score was 217 + 187 = 404 points.
Kukka attended her fourth obedience trial 4 May and once again went home with a First Prize (177.5 points/fourth overall)! As this was Kukka's third such award in the Open Class, she gained the Finnish obedience degree TK2. Congrats Johanna & Kukka!
A photo of Busy-Buddy's Aristarkos added to Hertta's pedigree - thank you Niina Papunen! In addition, there are a few pics of Mette at four months old on Mette's photo page.

4 Apr 2008 Last weekend was full of action so here is a brief summary of what was going on. On the Saturday, Kukka was competing in her second ever Open Class obedience trial and this was a repeat performance from the last time: Kukka got a First Prize scoring an impressive 196.5 points out of the maximum of 200 points. What is more, she was again placed first in the overall ranking and awarded a honorary prize. As the obedience trial was held at the Spring specialty of the Finnish Lapphund Club, Kukka also got a special prize for being the best-placed Lappie in the Open Class. Not to be outdone, Peppi also took part in an obedience trial (her first ever) and now has a First Prize (170 points) from the Novice Class to her record. She was placed sixth in the overall ranking. However, this was not enough for Peppi and Kati - in the evening they took part in an agility competition and scored their qualifying clean run for the Midi Agility 3 class. Wow!
On the Sunday, Kukka made an appearance in the show ring at the Lappie specialty and took a very nice placing in the huge intermediate class: she was graded Excellent and went second in the class under Paula Heikkinen-Lehkonen. She was only beaten by her half sister Fihtolas Ĺfelia, who is also sired by Cantavia Leijonamieli. Peppi and Kati attended their first Midi 3 class competitions without any major success, however, I am sure this is not the last we will hear from them! As for yours truly, Elina and I drove to Boden, Sweden, to show Kiara the PH at a sighthound specialty. I am glad we did as Kiara went BOB and got her crowning Swedish CC under Shamil Abrakimov. Kiara is now a Swedish champion! Thank you Aino Mäkelä for the photos below.
New photos: Cantavia Seesami (pet name Veera) and Kukka doing obedience. Thank you Jaana Ijäs and Birgitta Karhunen for the photos!
28 Mar 2008 Peppi and Kiara were eye tested yesterday. Peppi's eyes are clear, however, Kiara was diagnosed with MRD. Fortunately nothing more serious was found. What is more, Kiara's patellas were examined and they are normal.
26 Mar 2008 Introducing my new import from Denmark: this is Lapinlumon Aarni (d.o.b. 30 Dec 2007). He is by Orso-Farm Caamos out of DK Ch Lapinlumon Kiiski. Aarni will have his own page soon - watch this space!
Kukka was shown at the Ruovesi group show on 24 Mar. This time she was graded Very Good and placed fourth in her class by Hannu Talvi.
18 Mar 2008 Kukka took part in a reindeer herding test at Sodankylä 9 Mar and passed it with flying colours! She got an excellent evaluation from the judges. Thank you Johanna and Kukka for making the long journey to Lapland! For more photos from the event, visit Kukka's gallery - all photos by Kaisa Hurme.
Tanhu's puppies have now moved to their new homes. Pakkaslumi lives in Pudasjärvi, Piimäsuu in Pyhäntä, and Pohjantähti in Ylivieska, whereas the only bitch in the litter, Poutapilvi, stayed here in Oulu. New photos on the following pages: Cantavia Mustikkamaito aka Edi and Doris' gallery.
6 Mar 2008 Tanhu's hip and elbow evaluations are finally here: her hip score is left B, right A, and she has normal elbows (0/0).
Lempi's progeny has been updated with a photo of Jäkäläkummun Laiskajaakko - thank you owner Päivi Huovinen!
27 Feb 2008 The DNA test results are in: all four puppies are sired by Orso-Farm Atninbeaska.
25 Feb 2008 Tornio group show 23 Feb: out of the five dogs entered from our team, Nuuk was the only one who actually made it to the ring as the other owners and one of the dogs were feeling too poorly to travel to the show. Nuuk was graded Very Good by Saija Juutilainen and placed second in the intermediate class out of seven dogs. Well done!
Peppi took part in a couple of agility trials over the weekend and managed to snap up one more clean run and a win in the Midi Agility 2 class, so she only needs one more achievement like that to qualify for the Midi Agility 3 class. What excellent news!
14 Feb 2008 Orso-Farm Tanhuvilla, the dam of the current litter, has now been to the vet's for her hip and elbow x-rays. Both looked excellent, however, let us wait for the final score from the Finnish Kennel Club. Tanhu's patellas were examined, too, and they are normal.
The pups' as well as parent candidates' DNA samples are now being analysed and the results are expected to arrive by the end of the month.
10 Feb 2008 Cantavia Kodinonni "Nuuk" and Cantavia Tupasvilla "Doris" had their eyes checked 8 Feb. Nuuk was clear, however, Doris was not as lucky. A DNA test earlier showed that she was genetically prcd-PRA affected, and unfortunately the disease has now progressed to a stage where it can already be seen by an ophthalmologist. Now let us hope Doris does not go completely blind :( Thank you Pirjo and Hannakaisa for having your dogs examined!
3 Feb 2008 Kiara was graded Excellent by Andre van den Broek at Turku International 26 Jan.
20 Jan 2008
Nuuk has been to a couple of shows in January with nice results: first he was graded Very Good and placed third by Paula Rekiranta at Kajaani Int'l 5 Jan. Then the Spitz Clubs' specialty in Kuopio 20 Jan went even better as Nuuk was graded Excellent and won the junior class under breed specialist Tapio Kakko out an entry of 95 Lappies. Furthermore, Nuuk has now got his own website at http://cantaviakodinonni.kotisivukone.com/ (in Finnish only).
Kukka competed in her second obedience trial ever 6 Jan, this time in the Open Class. Again, she got a First Prize and is now eligible for the Advanced Class - at the age of 16 months! What is more, Kukka was placed first in the overall ranking and awarded a honorary prize. Excellent work again, Johanna and Kukka!
Photo updates: Youri (Cantavia Maahinen) and Nuka (Cantavia Kommervenkki).
13 Jan 2008 Finnish Lapphund puppies born 12 Jan.
12 Dec 2007 Results from the Finnish Winner Show held in Helsinki 8/9 Dec: Kiara EXC/3 under Rainer Vuorinen, Kukka VG under Bo Skalin, and Arttu won the champion class and went third in the dog challenge with res CACIB under Kresten Scheel.
Peppi took part in a temperament test in Haukipudas 10 Nov. The judges were Lauri Ojala and Jari Keinänen and Peppi scored 174 points, which is quite impressive for a Lappie. What is more, Peppi has collected her first clean run and a win in the Midi Agility 2 class!
We have got quite a few recent health results, some of which are good and some not-so-good: Cantavia Kanelikorppu's hips and elbows were x-rayed and the Kennel Club vet's evaluations came back as follows: hips E (severily dysplastic) and elbows 1/1 (mildly dysplastic). Litter brother Cantavia Kodinonni was more lucky: hips B, elbows 0/0, patella 0-0, and prcd-PRA Normal/Clear. Sister Cantavia Kesäheinä had her patellas examined and unfortunately she turned out to have patella luxation (grade 2) on her left knee. The right knee is normal. Arttu the Crested (Secret Line's Homemade Hotdog) was eye tested and his eyes are clear except for morbi corporis vitrei (vitreous degeneration). Thank you everyone for having your dogs examined!
Photos added to the following sections: Jeppe, Peppi, Remu (Cantavia Menninkäinen), Ropi (Cantavia Muskottipähkinä), and Miina (Cantavia Mielitietty). Thank you all who let me use their pictures: Minna Väänänen, Johanna Mäkelä, Taru Jääskeläinen, Saana Jänkälä, and Raili Ojalehto.
30 Oct 2007 Kukka was tested for prcd-PRA and the result came back as Normal/Clear. What is more, Jäkäläkummun Jänkäjustus, the sire of the Cantavia M litter, was tested Normal/Clear as well, which means that the litter is now clear by parentage.
28 Oct 2007 Excellent news from the show rings again:
Seinäjoki Int'l 20/21 Oct, 30 Lappies shown under Leif-Herman Wilberg: Peppi won the champion class, was placed 3rd in the bitch challenge and took her second CACIB! Kiara was shown for the first time this year and she went fourth in the bitch challenge out of eight PHs entered under Barbka Novak. Arttu made an appearance in the ring on Sunday and was placed third in the champion class by Bengt-Åke Bogren (68 Cresteds present).
Jyväskylä 21 Oct - Autumn Specialty of the Lapphund Club of Finland: What an unbelievable day as we got two class winners out of the huge entry of 170 Finnish Lapphunds! First up was Kukka who was the only junior bitch graded Excellent (13 entries in the class) and thereby automatically won her class under Hannu Talvi. Jeppe was shown as well, however, this time he was only graded Good by Esko Nummijärvi. Lempi went fourth in the veteran class under Maija Mäkinen, and the last one up was our star of the day Peppi - she won the champion class and finished off the day by placing second in the bitch challenge under Hannu Talvi. At the Saarijärvi group show 30 June Arttu took the breed and also went Group-3 under Lilian Hanniste! Photo below by Tiina Laine.
Kati and Peppi attended their third agility trial in Oulu 6 June and had another clean run - now they only need one more to move on to the Midi Agility 2 class! Doris was tested for prcd-PRA in May, and it is with a heavy heart I have to inform you that her status came back as Affected. I hope and pray that she will get to keep her eyesight for as long as possible. On a lighter note, Kukka had preliminary hip x-rays taken (too young for Kennel Club evaluation) and everything looks OK! Her lower back and knees were x-rayed as well and looked excellent. Photo updates on the following pages: Cantavia Absolutely Fab and Arttu's progeny (Kuutarhan Valkeat Yöt). Thank you Matilda Aine and Tiina Laine!

27 Nov 2006 I went to a group show in Kemi on Saturday. I had entered Lempi and DK Ch/Club Ch Lapinlumon Lapinloru aka Mimmi, who lives in Denmark but is staying with me for a while. Sakari Poti was judging and there were 33 Finnish Lapphunds in the ring (out of which 22 were bitches!). Mimmi managed a fantastic second place in the bitch challenge and as the winner already was a champion, the CC was passed on to Mimmi and she was thereby crowned a Finnish champion! This was way more than I had dared to hope for as this was Mimmi's first show in Finland. Many congrats to breeder/owner Sarah Brandes! Lempi did extremely well, too, by placing fourth in the bitch challenge and on top of that she was Best Veteran in Breed. What is more, later on the day she went Best Veteran in Show under Markku Santamäki! Kiara and Mimmi had their hips x-rayed a couple of weeks ago and we have now got the final results from the Finnish Kennel Club: Kiara B, Mimmi C (on a scale from A to E).
19 Nov 2006 Latest show news: Oulu International 7 Oct proved to be an excellent day for us as first Kiara went 4th Best Bitch under Zafra Sirik, then Jeppe went 3rd Best Dog w/ Res CC and finally Peppi topped off the day by winning the large Open bitch class, placing 3rd in the bitch challenge, gaining Res CACIB as well as her third and crowning CC on her first outing after her 2nd birthday! So congratulations are in order for the very first Cantavia champion. Finnish Lapphunds were judged by Rodi Hübenthal of Sweden. 3 Sept 2006 Photo update: new pictures of Doris in her gallery. Arttu went BOS in Helsinki yesterday under Tom Mather out of an entry of 34 Chinese Cresteds. What is more, Arttu's daughter Kuutarhan Taikakukka was made up on the day - congrats to breeder/owner Erja Pekkala!

Kiara has been shown with the following results: Cantavia Tupasvilla aka Doris made her show debut at Ylivieska going 3rd in the puppy class under Pirjo Hjelm, and Cantavia Leijonamieli aka Jeppe was graded Very Good and placed first in the intermediate class by Tuula Pratt at Ruukki.
29 June 2006 Latest news: Hertta, Peppi and Jeppe were tested for
prcd-PRA with the following results: Things have been rather quiet on the show front - nevertheless Kiara went BOB at the Oulu all-breed show 14 May under Marjatta
Pylvänäinen-Suorsa and gained a creditable second place in the Champion class at the European Winner show in
Helsinki 10 June under Unto Timonen.
Kiara also took part in her very first lure coursing competition at Kajaani 18 June scoring 408 points. Photo updates on the following pages: Ronja's picture gallery, Cantavia Leijonamieli, Cantavia Alive n' Kickin, Hertta's progeny (new picture of Orso-Farm Rosmariini), Elvis' progeny (Jujucans Moon of Paris), Arttu's progeny (Hebblas Tincture Tinsel), and Kiara's pedigree (Siphra's Summernight City).

10 May 2006 The new website is up and running now. I owe a big thank you to Johanna Kuoppala who did such an excellent job on the layout of this site!
7 May 2006 These first months of 2006 have been rather quiet as far as dogs are concerned. Here is a brief update of what has been going on:
Peppi attended a reindeer herding test at Narkaus 5 Mar and passed it with ease. She got very excited about herding and proved to be an agile and fast herder (she will need to work on the obedience part though!). Thank you Kati for handling Peppi in the paddock! For more pictures from the event, visit Peppi's gallery. Peppi had her health checks performed: her eyes were clear and she was free from patella luxation. Now we just have to wait for the final evaluation of the hip and elbow x-rays back from the Finnish Kennel Club. What is more, Peppi took part in her very first fun agility competition and she certainly did it with style: Peppi won the Medium dogs' class! What a start. As for dog shows, Kiara went runner-up to Best Bitch with Res CC and Res CACIB at Kajaani 6 Jan under Cristian Stefanescu. At Tampere 18 Mar she was graded Very Good by Steven Seymour, and at Lahti 23 Apr she went 3rd Best Bitch under Manuel Loureiro Borges. The best result so far this year was achieved at Vaasa 30 Apr where Kiara went BOB and finished her championship under Paula Heikkinen-Lehkonen! Unfortunately she was unable to attend the group judging. Arttu was shown at Turku 22 Jan and went 4th Best Dog under Harry Tast. Oona's puppies moved to their new homes in January. Timotei and Tuhatkauno live in Haukipudas, Tupasvilla in Suomussalmi and Timjami flew all the way to Belgium. I met the three puppies that stayed in Finland at a Match Show 9 Apr and I was happy to see that all of them were outgoing and very well behaved even though it was their first time out and about. Rekku and Vilma made their ring debuts and both of them were placed well. Doris' first appearance in the ring took place a month later at a Match Show in Oulu where she was placed BIS-7.
